Weezer (Green Album)

"Weezer (Green Album)" by Weezer
2001
A hard, highly efficient half-hour of pop-punk, Weezer's third album was both their move back into stardom as well as their slow fall into obsolescence. It was all diminishing returns after this and if they ever get back together it's doubtful they will be able to reach the same heights. But on its own, the record is a perfect pop gem, mixing light metal thrash with unexpectedly catchy hooks and vocal harmonies. Coming in just short of half an hour, it's the sort of album that used to get released in the mid sixties when the Beatles and the Beach Boys had to feed the insatiable appetites of their fans with multiple releases a year. There isn't a wasted moment, from the head-banging riffage of "Hash Pipe" to the pastoral pop of "Island in the Sun." The album doesn't contain the quirky fun of their debut and lacks the solid gut-punch of "Pinkerton," but it's the third best album they produced, which is saying a lot.
