Weezer (Blue Album)

"Weezer (Blue Album)" by Weezer
1994
A charming, unaspicious debut album from a band that would become a rock 'n' roll touchstone during the next few years, Weezer's first self-titled is one of those albums that seems to find its way into the record collection of anyone who was a teenager at any point during the 1990s. Basically early Cheap Trick with the dark satire replaced with an overt geekiness and a harder metal thump, the band thrashes its way through its quirky material in an almost efficient fashion. "Buddy Holly" was the monster hit of the year, catchy in a way few rock songs were at the time, while "Undone (The Sweater Song)" became something of a party anthem, which is pretty good for a song that lifted its bass line right out of a Pixies song. It's an album that shows what Weezer does best: create fun music that doesn't make too many demands but doesn't insult your intelligence.
