Watchmen

"Watchmen," by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons
DC Comics 1995 trade paperback edition
The one true seminal work in the world of graphic novels, "Watchmen" is still as powerful a piece of work now as it was more than twenty years ago. Depicting an alternative America in which superheroes actually existed (to an extent), the story begins with the murder of a former hero turned government agent and the vast plot that this murder reveals. The sense of nuclear annihilation permeates the story as other former heros (banned from action due to public mistrust) attempt to unravel the ever murkier mystery. Layers of subtext fill the story, allowing it to be read on so many levels that almost anyone can find something to enjoy. It's thoughtful, beautiful entertainment.
