The Soft Bulletin

"The Soft Bulletin," by the Flaming Lips
Warner Bros., 1999
One of those albums that manages to be a classic while also being relatively unknown, "The Soft Bulletin" is a landmark in pop music production. Layers of sounds are combined with the bent lyrical styling of head Lip Wayne Cohen, making a lush, thrilling experience. The music has true, almost classical depth to it, rewarding repeated listening with new discoveries. Progressive but not self-consciously so, the subtle concepts of the album take some time to become ingrained, but it's such a pleasant experience that you will hardly notice how difficult the whole thing actually is. A classic.
