"Pinkerton" by Weezer
1996

The thing about Rolling Stone magazine is that they have never really been on top of what the quality music of the time is. Naming "Pinkerton" the worst record of 1996 is one of the many moments in the magazine's history that shows how out of touch its staff is with what's going on with the youth culture they ostensibly cover (they also panned Neil Young's "Harvest," Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and Brian Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" when they originally came out, if that tells you anything.) With guitars bleeding all over the place, shuddering beats and all the emotion mixed right to the front, it's one of the best rock albums of the 1990s. Ditching the nerdy sunshine pop rock of their debut (but not the pop hooks), the album was a major step forward for the band and unfortunately one they would never follow through on.
