"In Rainbows" by Radiohead
2007

As a piece of music, "In Rainbows" has become somewhat drowned out by the talk over its method of distribution (you can download it from the band's website for any price you feel like paying). But regardless of the means of acquisition (or the cost), the album has a definite place in the band's discography, continuing in the same vein as 2003's "Hail to the Thief." That album, like this one, took the band's early guitar-heavy sound and combined it with their later abstract electronica. It was an interesting piece of music, if not their most dynamic work to date. "In Rainbows" has the same feel, an interesting album from a band that has done much better work. But like "Thief," it has its pleasures. The album closer "Videotape" is one of their better ballads, while "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" sounds a tad like Tortoise with vocals. Overall, it's part of a trend in the band's work and will certainly be picked up by the die hards. The beauty of the new "pay what you want" distribution model though is that if you wouldn't have bothered with it before, you can just get it for free. You might enjoy it.
