"Hissing Prigs in Static Couture" by Brainiac
1996
Had a car wreck not taken lead singer Tim Taylor's life, we might have gotten to see where Brainiac would have gone after this album. Such "what if?" questions don't really mean much though, and "Hissing" is about as good of a closing salvo as one could hope for from any band. Opening strong with the brief (but oddly pretty) "Indian Poker, Pt. 3" and hits its stride early with the almost danceable freakfest of "Pussyfootin'" followed by "Vincent Come on Down," which is one of their most devastating rockers. The album is the perfect summery of the sound Brainiac aimed for during their short career, a combination of electronic noise, punk energy, dancefloor beats and nearly Dadaist lyrical imagery. "Hissing" is a classic album that seems more relevant today then ever before.
