"Girls Can Tell" by Spoon
2001
Spoon is a rock band that doesn't really rock, yet still manages to make brilliant rock music. Masters of the sparse, on "Girls" they create a beautiful collection of songs out of simple elements pieced together with uncommon craftsmanship. "Everything Hits at Once" opens the album on a fine note with its subdued guitar hook and spare piano, sounding familiar the first time you hear it even though it doesn't really sound like anything else (much like the band as a whole). Displaying an almost airtight songcraft through its 11 tracks, the band covers bouncy pop rock ("Take a Walk") along with darker-hued melodies ("Chicago at Night") while never leaving the album's overall sense of sonic space. It's a classic, but not an obvious one.
