"The Cosmic Game" by the Thievery Corporation
ESL Music, 2005

It can be said that modern electronic music is primarily concerned with the synthesis of different sounds rather than with the creation of new ones. This is not to disparage it; both avenues are worthwhile. In this view, the Thievery Corporation hold a vital place in the history of modern electronica. Their amalgamation of chilled-out beats and a wide range of non-Western sounds is as accessible as it is refreshing. But their sound has limits. Their 2002 effort, "The Richest Man in Babylon," was a few solid tracks wrapped in a sea of filler. "The Cosmic Game" ditches the filler and fills its place with a panorama of new sounds. While both albums are a drop off from 2000's "The Mirror Conspiracy," tracks such as "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" and "Holographic World" represent this Washington D.C. duo at their best. If the album occasionally feels too calculating in its stylistic shifts, it shows a willingness to grow and evolve that will serve the pair well.
