"The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger
Little Brown 1991 paperback edition
The eternal teenage classic, touching on a common feeling with such force that it has made whole generations wince with recognition. Telling the story of one Holden Caulfield and his trip to NYC after being expelled from a private school, Salinger captures the voice of the cynical adolescent so well that character transcends the coming-of-age plot. Snotty, irreverent and always disappointed when the adult world fails to meet his expectations, Holden has become one of the most memorable literary creations in 20th century literature and the book has become a classic on the weight of that fact. The plot itself is basically a device to give things to Holden to react to, and taken on that level the book is a quick, engaging read.
