"Brain Droppings" by George Carlin
1997 Hyperion hardcover first edition
George Carlin is a comedian who has turned controversy into a career. His dark, caustic though often playful humor is planted firmly in an outsider's perspective; so well planted in fact that it borders on predictability. While never really reaching the bright, incandescent levels of insight attained by Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor or Bill Hicks, Carlin still managed to take his skewed view of the world and turn it into thoughtful entertainment. While his nihilism is occasionally tiring, his mastery of timing and good material has made him a comedic mainstay. This book, his first in what became a series of similar collections, pulls together bits and pieces of old routines and spices them up with the addition of lists, phrases, satires and other pieces of humorous detritus collected over a long career. Extended rants and satires sit alongside such random bits of absurdity as the phrase "Aluminum is a jive metal." A solid collection of humor, both in small doses and in extended readings.
