"Vincebus Eruptum" by Blue Cheer
1968
It's hard for a band to get any respect when the song they are best known for is a cover and their sound is most often described as a precursor to Grand Funk Railroad. Yet Blue Cheer unleashed on this album, their only worthwhile work, a sound that would go on to influence a generation of hard rockers. Along with Steppenwolf, they set the groundwork for heavy metal, and along with the Stooges set the tone for punk rock. Their sole hit, the opening cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," has lost some of its power over the years. On the other hand, the blues-rock wail of "Parchment Farm" is still as frightening as ever. Distorted, amateurish guitars backed up by the most basic of beats grinding out songs about sex, drugs and frustration. And this isn't a rock 'n' roll classic? There's no justice in the world.
