Aqualung

"Aqualung" by Jethro Tull
1971
A dour combination of folk and heavy metal; a concept album that deals with how organized religion interferes with man's relationship with God; an album with more flute solos than guitar solos. No combination of these elements should have become a best selling album. It's a credit to Ian Anderson and Co.'s skills as musicians and songwriters that the cerebral music and subject matter comes off as populist rock 'n' roll (a trick Tool would pull off a few decades later). "Aqualung" is the band's ultimate statement of purpose and the most consistently good albums they would release. One of the best albums of the 1970s. Flutes never sounded cooler.
