Animal Farm

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell
New American Library, 1974 paperback edition

The Western literary canon sometimes seems a bit short of political parables involving animals. Thank god for George Orwell filling that otherwise empty niche. One of what you might call the "American High School Classics" thanks to it's easily digestable themes and color coded characters, its popularity hardly draws away from the fact that it is a chilling political fable. Basically detailing a communist uprising on a small English farm, it matches Orwell's hatred of the Soviets with his hatred of totalitarianism in general, making for a quick, invigorating read.
